Allegations are mounting that certain business establishments, operating under the banner of co-living, are misleading youth and eroding long-standing social values, said Chunchu Kumar. The practice of setting up hostels where men and women live together within residential colonies is increasingly being viewed as a source of social disturbance. Local residents, intellectuals and community leaders have expressed deep anxiety over the growing impact of such establishments on neighbourhood safety and social order. The number of hostels in the city has already risen sharply, accompanied by reports of inappropriate and unlawful activities. The recent appearance of open advertisements promoting co-living hostels within residential areas has further exposed the seriousness of the issue. What was once dismissed as hearsay has now assumed a visible and troubling reality, fuelling fear and unrest among residents. Despite multiple complaints being submitted to the concerned authorities, there has been little action on the ground. Residents allege that repeated appeals by local communities, student unions and social organisations have been ignored, with the government machinery appearing to be either indifferent or compromised by vested interests.
Reacting strongly, All India Journalists Protection Force Chairman Chunchu Kumar said India is a nation rooted in culture and discipline. Introducing what he termed a distorted lifestyle in the name of co-living within residential neighbourhoods, purely for commercial gain, was both irresponsible and dangerous. “Promoting such hostels for monetary benefit and misleading young people is not a business practice—it is a social offence,” he asserted. He demanded immediate and stringent action against those operating such hostels, stating that democracy does not permit experiments that undermine social ethics and public morality.
While government officials, civil society groups, student organisations and intellectuals have voiced strong opposition, the absence of decisive government action so far is deeply disappointing, he said. Public opinion, he warned, is rapidly turning against administrative inaction. Citizens have urged the government to respond without delay, conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the functioning of co-living hostels, and initiate strict legal measures against illegal and unethical practices. Failure to act now, they caution, could allow the issue to escalate into a serious social crisis in the near future. Echoing the words of philosopher-poet Sri Sri Vemana, “When righteousness is abandoned, wrongdoing becomes inevitable,” intellectuals say the present situation mirrors this timeless truth. If institutions meant to uphold dharma remain silent, society itself will bear the consequences. The growing demand is clear: the government must wake up, protect cultural values, and place firm checks on businesses that threaten social harmony under the guise of modern living.
